Pilates vs. weight lifting: Which is better for building muscle? It depends on your objective.

If your objective is to increase muscle mass—make the muscles bigger—then traditional weight lifting is the way to go. Why? There’s no limit to the amount of weight and resistance you can add.

Machine Pilates, on the other hand, like what we do here at Speakeasy, doesn’t build mass as effectively because of its limited intensity progression.

BUT! Machine Pilates is fantastic for:

• Building strength. Think, sculpted muscles, not massive muscles.

Strengthening the smaller stabilizing muscles. Machine Pilates doesn’t hammer down on the big workhorse muscles like traditional weight lifting. Instead, we focus on powering up all the little accessory muscles that support the bigger players like the biceps, triceps and quadriceps. This helps bring the entire body into better balance.

Increasing flexibility

• Improving core strength

• Enhancing posture

• Reducing stress

• Lightening your mood

Making new friends while lying down. (No, not like that!)
